“It only takes one drop of water to start a waterfall.”

About Us

In 1976, as the United States celebrated its bicentennial, the thoughts of chartering a chapter milled in the mind of Lake County resident, Isabelle Buckner, and there Lambda Nu Omega was chartered in Lake County Illinois. Lambda Nu Omega chapter was distinguished as the first African American Sorority chapter in Lake County Illinois, upon its charter on May 27, 1977, at the Waukegan Public Library. Today, the Lambda Nu Omega Chapter has over 50 active members and continues to serve the entrepreneurial, economic, social, physical, and mental health needs of the underserved people within the Lake County cities of Zion, Waukegan, North Chicago, Gurnee, and Round Lake, Illinois. Lambda Nu Omega continues to be a beacon of succor to the constituents of Lake County. We persevere in the trek to capture a vision fair and are pledged to render service to all mankind.

Our History

LNO Founders.jpg

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated had its humble beginnings as the vision of nine college students on the campus of Howard University in 1908. Since then, the sorority has flourished into a globally-impact organization of over 265,000 college-trained members, bound by the bonds of sisterhood and empowered by a commitment to servant leadership that is both domestic and international in its scope.

As Alpha Kappa Alpha has grown, it has maintained its focus in two key arenas: the lifelong personal and professional development of each of its members; and galvanizing its membership into an organization of respected power and influence, consistently at the forefront of effective advocacy and social change that results in equality and equity for all citizens of the world.

We are delighted to welcome you to our website!

Our international organization was founded by some truly visionary women on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. on January 15, 1908.  Later, our leaders have had the foresight to incorporate the organization and to trademark our shield, our colors and other symbols that are important to us.  Today, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated ® (AKA), is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-educated women.  With well over 300,000 graduate and undergraduate members, we actively support communities around the globe.

Our Lambda Nu Omega Chapter made history on May 27, 1977 when we were chartered in Lake County, Illinois.  Our chartering president, Dr. Isabelle Buckner, was a principal and educator for many years in the Waukegan school system.  She inspired so many students and faculty at Carman Elementary, that it was renamed Carman-Buckner Elementary School.  Our Chapter, in partnership with Lake County Pearls, continues the vision of the chartering members, by routinely encouraging scholastic achievement.  Today, we feed some of our youngest students, so they are ready to learn and award scholarships to our area youth, to help them finance college.

Though supporting educational excellence with high ethical standards is our cornerstone, we serve our northern Illinois communities and bring local life to all of our international initiatives.  Simply put, our mission is to promote unity, to solve problems for girls and women, and to provide “Service to All Mankind.”

It is with humble pride that I encourage you to peruse our website to learn more about our contributions to the people of Lake County, IL.  And, if you are a member and are looking for an AKA home, we invite you to visit us during a local Chapter meeting.

Blessed and honored to serve,

Diane Summers,

Chapter President
