Starting in 2015, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), started working together to increase mental health awareness in the African American community. AKA Chapters will work with NAMI state organizations and NAMI affiliates to educate African Americans about mental health, treatment and recovery. At this month’s chapter meeting, the Health Promotions Committee had a small activity on anxiety in light of the AKA/NAMI Awareness for Community Impact Day. The chapter divided into small groups to discuss a photographic expression of symptoms associated with anxiety and was charged with the task to provide their interpretation of the anxiety symptom. Great job, Soror Dalavia and committee, for keeping the chapter in the know about mental illness, its affects, characteristics and the many varieties of mental illness diseases that are out there. Together, we can help communities access much needed treatment services and support.
